Venture 250km north of the Arctic Circle to the southern shores of Lake Inari in Northern Finland, and experience a short-but-sweet, Northern Lights hunting holiday.
Boutique Wilderness Hotel Nangu sits amongst the glistening, wintry landscape of Northern Finland, in a stunningly remote spot by Lake Inari. The views from the hotel are primarily of the lake which is thick with ice and snow at this time of year. This means that, by night, there is a vast expanse of dark sky above you, ideal for Northern Lights hunting.
The lake and surrounding area also offer a base for a myriad of activities during your time here. Despite the short length of this trip, we have included all of the “must-dos” when visiting Northern Finland. This comprises of a snowshoeing excursion, a journey to the village of Nellim via snowmobile-pulled sleigh, snowshoeing and two Northern Lights hunts, as well as a Northern Lights workshop to begin the trip. You will also spend one full day visiting two of the animals which have become synonymous with this part of the world, as you spend a morning in enjoying a husky safari and an afternoon visiting a reindeer farm.Read more
By night, you will spend one relaxed evening around a campfire, listening to tales and facts about the Northern Lights whilst hopefully admiring an Aurora-lit sky. Then, you will take things up a notch as you venture even further by car, escaping any light-pollution and cloud cover that might obscure your vision, offering you optimal Aurora hunting opportunities.
The newly renovated, boutique, adults-only Hotel Nangu is opening its doors for the first time in winter 2017 and has created ripples of excitement amongst us here at The Aurora Zone. The owners also happen to be our longstanding friends and suppliers, and we know that they offer nothing less than excellence. With this as your base, we can assure you that every free moment you have can be savoured and enjoyed.
So, go on, spare a few days from your hectic schedules this winter and escape to the remote wilderness of Northern Finland. Returning with memories that will last a lifetime and impressive stories to tell your friends and family, we know that you will not regret it.

Once you land at Ivalo Airport, you will be greeted by your driver who will be waiting to escort you to the idyllic shores of Lake Inari. The journey will take around thirty minutes, as you venture further North and deeper into the remote wilderness of Finnish Lapland.
After arriving, you will have some time to settle into your cosy hotel room before dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.
You will also receive your cold weather clothing and your Aurora alert tonight, prior to your informative Aurora workshop.
This workshop is the perfect introduction to your Aurora hunting trip, as you will be talked through the wonders of this natural phenomenon, as well as receiving useful photography tips.
Be sure to head outside after your workshop tonight, as it may mean that you begin your trip with the dazzling sight of the Aurora Borealis.Included Meals: Dinner
Dog sledding and reindeer day in Nellim, Evening Aurora Camp
Today, the trip will truly commence as you begin your first full day at Nangu, which has been jam-packed with two of our favourite winter activities, including an evening Aurora hunt.
After filling up on breakfast, you will take a transfer from the hotel to Nellim, which is a small village that lies approximately thirty minutes away. Once you arrive, the group will be split into two, as one half will head to the husky farm while the others start with a reindeer experience. Both groups will enjoy lunch together at Nellim Wilderness Hotel once they have finished their first activity before their second activity commences.
After arriving at the husky farm, you will meet an expert musher (and your guide for the day) who will give you a brief tour of the farm. The first thing that you will notice is the loud, impatient barking of the huskies that are raring to take you on your sleigh-ride. They must wait a little longer as you are given a thorough safety briefing and lesson on how to guide your own husky team before you set off.
Once your guide is comfortable that you are ready, you will head out, huskies first, on an unforgettable journey. With two sharing a sled, you can appreciate the sudden silence as the dogs are so focused on running. This is an unforgettable way to enjoy the snow-laden trees and the stunning, crisp white surroundings. Half-way through the drive, you will have the chance to pause and swap with your driving partner, so that both of you can try taking control.
Then, you will leave the husky farm via a snowmobile-pulled sleigh, taking a small diversion to the Russian border and to Nellim’s charming church. The church is a beautiful log building that sits amongst the snow and is well worth a spot of exploration before continuing onto the reindeer farm.
Your experience at the reindeer farm will be led by a traditional Sámi reindeer herder, as you are shown around and are told about the herder’s life, customs and culture here in Northern Finland. Feel free to ask any questions about this fascinating way of life, as the Sámi community is always forthcoming in sharing their beliefs with guests.
It is then time to meet the reindeer, as you are told a bit about the animals before being shown how to feed them.
Overall, this activity will last for around seven hours, so you will be more than ready for a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant tonight!
Your busy day will end with a relaxing Aurora hunt, as you head to a dedicated Aurora camp in the hope of spotting the Northern Lights this evening.
Beginning with a peaceful snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride, you will kick back and enjoy a cosy journey beneath the stars. You will travel further and further away from any light pollution from the hotel until you come to an Aurora camp spot where you can huddle up around a warming open fire.
Hopefully, while you enjoy a hot drink and some interesting facts and stories told by your guide, the Northern Lights will dance and swirl above you, lighting up the night and putting on an awe-inspiring display. After around 2.5 hours, you will return to the hotel.Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Snowshoeing, Sámi Siida Museum and Aurora hunt by car or minibus
This morning will feel comparatively relaxed following yesterday, as you prepare to go on a snowshoeing excursion after breakfast.
Snowshoes will be provided by the hotel, and your guide will show you how to securely strap these over your winter boots before you set off. It is amazing how much further you can travel in snowshoes, as you can cover areas of extremely thick snow that you would otherwise find yourself knee-deep in.
With your guide leading the way, you will take to the snowshoeing trails and venture to even more remote areas of wilderness. Along the way, your guide will explain features of the landscape and any wildlife that you might see. It is also common to spot animal prints embedded into the snow, which your guide can give you some insight into.
At some point, you will stop for hot drinks, while the comforting sound of a crackling open fire acts as the only background noise in the peaceful surroundings. This activity will last for around two hours.
In the early afternoon, you will take a transfer to the town of Inari, which is the Sámi culture capital here in Finland. You will arrive at the award-winning Siida museum, where you can admire the temporary and permanent exhibits highlighting the fascinating aspects of Sámi culture. As well as this, you can enjoy some superb photography that shows the extreme changes in climate from season to season in this part of the world. Lunch will then be served at the nearby Inari Wilderness Hotel before you return to Nangu.
After a relaxed late afternoon and final dinner at the hotel, you will head out on a more fast-paced Aurora hunt for the final night of your trip.
Travelling by car or minibus, you can venture even further into the wilderness and the darkness, keeping your eyes on the sky for a potential Auroral display. Aiming to escape any cloud cover and travelling to a viewpoint that your guide has chosen based on the conditions today, you will hopefully come face-to-face with the astounding Northern Lights, as they dance across the sky.Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today, it is time to depart ready for your flight home. After breakfast, your transfer will take you to Ivalo Airport, as you bid farewell to a fantastic few days.Included Meals: Breakfast

Most of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate. Minimum numbers are detailed on each holiday page and are always approximate. Group sizes for tailor made holidays will vary for each of the activities. For private departures you may also be joined by other guests during the activities unless you have discussed specific private activities with us.
If your selected date has not yet reached minimum numbers you will be informed at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date has not reached the required minimum numbers nine weeks before your scheduled departure date we will contact you and discuss the various options available to you. We will always do all we can to operate a holiday and in some cases we may be able to operate the holiday by combining your itinerary with that of other guests for some activities (this may mean that the maximum group size is increased but this will be discussed in full with you).
If we are unable to operate the holiday then you will be offered the chance to transfer to an alternative holiday or date (subject to availability). If the alternative is more expensive you will be asked to pay the difference, if it is cheaper then you will be reimbursed. You will also be offered the option to cancel and receive a full refund of all monies paid.

During your stay, you will be supplied with an Aurora alert. This is typically a mobile phone system to which the staff will send a text should the Northern Lights be sighted. The alerts generally operate until 1 am but it is best to confirm with your guide as times may vary.
The alerts are designed as an aid to Aurora hunting and, although every effort will be made to issue an alert should the conditions seem conducive to a display, things can change very quickly so you should not rely solely on them and should also keep an eye on the sky yourself.
The minimum age for participation in our itinerary is 18 years old however, for some activities and shared transfers, our guests may be joined by others and these may include those of a younger age. Any younger participants will be fully supervised by an adult and the guides will ensure that they are only able to participate if there will be no affect on the activity experience. None of the hotels we feature have a minimum age and so there may be families staying at them with younger children, especially during the holiday periods.
To drive a snowmobile you must have a full driving licence and be over 18 years old.
The hotel and all staff were absolutely fantastic. We would like to thank our guide Jani in particular - he was friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and a brilliant and safe driver. He helped make our trip.
